16' Skiffs Education for Sailors and Volunteers

Published Wed 05 Nov 2025

16’ crews know the rules and will usually observe right of way. Upwind they can see, will avoid starboard boats, or call to port boats as needed. However, downwind 16s have a large blind spot behind their spinnakers and don’t sail a straight line. They bear away in gusts and head up in lulls. They’re also extremely fast - sometimes barely in control - and the skill level among crews can vary, especially in strong breezes. There’s real potential for a high-speed collision, so please take extra care, stay alert, and think ahead, even when you have right of way.
