Contenders

Why is it fun?
On the wire planing to windward on a well-mannered international class high performance skiff with a great bunch of fellow aficionados, life doesn't get much better. Once you've sailed a Contender you'll be hooked.
Why sail this class?
It's exhilarating, rewarding and lots of fun. You'll get a very warm welcome, there is great camaraderie and sailors including national and world champions are keen to share their knowledge. Who is it suitable for?
You'll need sailing experience. It's a beautiful boat to sail and a challenge to get among the leading boats. For sailors of all ages with reasonable fitness or looking for a reason to get and stay fit. Our oldest club sailor is 68 and plans to sail his boat for at least another 12 years.
Sailing at Balmoral
With 8 Contenders this season, the racing will be great. The different clubs travel occasionally during the season to sail with the Contenders at other clubs.
Racing opportunities outside of Balmoral
You'll enjoy trips away with good racing and healthy fleet numbers at regattas. Nationals are held around Australia. And being an international class with fleets in Australia, the UK, Europe, the US and NZ, you get the opportunity to sail in places like Lake Garda (look it up if you don't know it). Your other half will not object as long as they go to!!
The Boat: brief technical overview
Designed by Ben Lexcen (Bob Miller as he then was) and first launched at Balmoral, it is a single-hander 4.875m (16') long with a 10.8sqm main and trapeze. Getting started
We can line you up for a test sail, help you choose a good boat within your budget and you'll get loads of pointers on different set-ups, what people find works for them and tips on improving your skills.
